Sr Tsige and her colleagues developed a novel and simple way of helping to address boredom, lack of food and lack of income in the slum areas. For certain households with a small patch of land adjoining their huts, they developed a template for a house garden. In this program, Sr Tsige and her colleague Ken provide households with wire and poles for fencing their patch of land and seeds to set up a small garden. The household is expected to prepare the ground, plant, grow and harvest the vegetables in order to feed the members of the household. Any excess vegetables can be sold for income or shared with another family. If the ground is not used, sometimes the families sell the soil for bricks, thereby depleting and rendering useless the only resource they have. 100% of all money donated to this cause will provide the fencing necessary for men and women to turn land they own into vegetable gardens as a means of food, nutrition, and livelihood.
